Saying that government service was not for profit, President Rodrigo Duterte said he recently fired “a close associate” over allegations of corruption.
Duterte didn’t mention the name of the government official but National Irrigation Administration chief Peter Laviña has just quit his post.
“I just fired one last week. Unless the– Alam mo ganitong usapan, ‘Adre sama tayo sa gobyerno, pero malinis ‘to ha. Hindi ‘to itong, do not… This is not for profit,” Duterte said in an ambush interview after the groundbreaking of Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway.
“Huwag ninyo akong hiyain. ‘Pag hiniya ninyo ako, hiwalay-hiwalay tayo. I told him to resign,” he added without naming the official.
He said that his decision to let go of the official was against his will.
Duterte repeated the same story when he said that he would not tolerate corruption in government in a speech before the Cebu of Commerce and Industry Inc. (CCCI) in Lapu-Lapu City.
“I just fired a close associate of mine… I asked him to go quietly because of suggestions of corruption,” Duterte said.
Duterte promised that he would give Filipinos a respite from corruption.
“What was pulling us down throughout the years was really corruption,” he added.
Again, Duterte did not name the close associate he removed from office.
Before he was appointed NIA chief in November 2016, Laviña served as the Deputy Cabinet Secretary. He was also Duterte’s campaign spokesperson. —NB, GMA News
