Senators Gregorio Honasan and Panfilo Lacson–two politikos with backgrounds in law enforcement–have backed President Rodrigo Duterte’s order for the military to fortify disputed Philippine islands in the South China Sea as well as to plant a flag there.
“There is nothing illegal immoral unconstitutional or wrong with planting, raising the Philippine flag on Philippine territory, and our elected President visiting any part of the Philippines,” said Honasan, a former solider.
“And if necessary, …’ang mamatay ng dahil sayo,’” he added, as if saying that such act among the military is worth dying for.
Honasan went on to stress that the islands in the South China Sea that’s being targeted for “occupation” by Duterte is “already ours.”
“It is not necessary to assert our ownership over something that is already ours. It is procedural.”
Meanwhile, former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief-turn-senator Lacson called on Filipinos to support the Commander-in-Chief’s play regarding the country’s maritime disputes with its neighbors, particularly China.
“Asserting our sovereignty and territorial integrity can take many forms and courses of action. Whatever goodwill and good relations the President has established with China, at the end of the day, our national interest should always take the front seat,” Lacson said, alluding to Duterte’s friendly stance toward Beijing.
“All of us who have genuine love for our country must therefore support the president on the course of action that he has chosen to take,” he added.
