President Rodrigo Duterte has no plans to stop protests against the hero’s burial for dictator Ferdinand Marcos, even saying the organizers need not apply for permits.

Speaking in Zamboanga City Friday (Nov. 25), Duterte said reiterated his guarantee about freedom of expression in light of the impending rally against Marcos’ burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani on Nov. 30.

“Dito naman sa uso man, may Yellow Movement man on the 30th. I say, I still give the guarantee. You can freely demonstrate anything you want, anything at all,” he said.

Duterte said protesters can continue holding mass actions for as long as they like.

“Pagsabi mong you want to demonstrate for one week, fine. One month, still okay. One year yeah, walang problema,” he said.

The President said he won’t impose limits on protests as long as they are done in open public spaces, and neither will he call on soldiers to back up policemen who will be deployed to locations of the protest.

On the same day of Duterte’s speech, a so-called “Black Friday” protest was staged in Luneta to protest the transfer of Marcos’ remains to the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

Towards the end of his speech, the President even asked the media how the rally was going. When told that bulk of the attendees were college students, he said: “Like I said, I may disagree by what you say but I will defend your right to say it.”
