Senator Manny Pacquiao on Wednesday said running for president in 2022 is far from his mind even after President Rodrigo Duterte joked about endorsing the boxing icon.
In an interview with reporters, Pacquiao said he wants to focus on his legislative work than ponder about seeking the presidency.
“Wala pa sa isip natin ‘yan. Focused tayo sa trabaho natin,” said the neophyte senator who won his first term in the Senate in the May 2016 national elections.
“Akin, trabaho lang talaga…Kung paano ako nag-dedicate sa sarili ko noong nagstart ako ng boxing at na-accomplish ko sa boxing career ko, the way I disciplined myself to work hard, dito, dedicated ako masyado sa trabaho ko,” he said, adding that he is “enjoying” his work as a senator.
During his recent courtesy call in Malacañang, Duterte raised Pacquiao’s hand and quipped, “for president na ito ah.”
Pacquiao said it was just Duterte’s way of congratulating him on his victory in the boxing ring against Jessie Vargas.
Pacquiao said only God decides who is fit to run for president.
“Hindi naman sarado. Ang pagiging Presidente, ang Panginoon ang naglalagay dyan. Huwag natin masyadong mataas para panagarapin,” the senator said.
Pacquiao also mentioned that he believes in the change promised by President Duterte.
“‘Yung problema muna natin dito, resolbahin natin kasi pag hindi natin na-resolba to at hindi nabago yung bansa natin hanggang six years, parang ano na rin, ayaw ko na lang sa poitika,” Pacquiao said.
“Yan ang commitment ko na kailangan may matulong tayo, kailangan may mabago tayo. So, pasalamat tayo na pareho kami ng advoacy ng Presidente. I’m sure within six years, marami at malaki ang pagbabago sa bansa natin,” he added. — VVP, GMA News
